Laos : Bullets in Lan Xang (Land of a Million Elephants)

Nong Khai Wat Landlocked Laos, the jewel of Indochina's crown, lost true independence when the Lan Xang empire broke up at the end of the 17th century. Subsequent interference by Vietnam, Thailand, China, Burma, Japan, France and latterly the United States has left a nation of predominantly hill tribe people scarred and wearied by generations of upheaval, living in  a stunningly beautiful landscape dominated by lushly forested mountains and valleys. Communist rule since 1975 has seen relative peace at the cost of isolation and restriction but recent indications of a more liberal and welcoming leadership have convinced North Siam Roadrunners that now is the moment to explore this forgotten corner before the rich political and cultural landscape of Laos changes forever.
